Antique Alabaster Statue of a Sculptor |
This is a tall and superbly detailed French alabaster statue of a young man sitting on a stone ledge sculpting a face on a roundel. The roundel rests upon a large base with a frontal cartouche bearing a fleur de lis surrounded by laurel leaf branches. What is so superb about this statue is the hand carved detail on his clothing. His tunic bears a tiny floral and foliate motif and his leggings have small raised dots imitating ribbed material. The artist who sculpted this piece was a master of detail. The young man wears a cap covering a mass of curly hair, an apron over his tunic, and shoes with button straps cover his leggings and feet. His face has a pleasant yet determined expression while his arms and hands hold the sculptor’s metal chisel and hammer. The statue has a signature on the back but the major portion of his name has been chipped away. There is only the first initial “ F” with a curved line showing. |
