Antique French Barbotine Vase
Edouard Gilles 1880
H=13 3/4
An Antique French Barbotine Vase on a Footed Bronze Base decorated with the French Dolphin Face and Fleur-de-Lys- EG Impressed on bottom raised medallion- - Very Good Antique Condition.
Edouard Gille owned and operated his own shop in Paris from 1870-1880. He was one of only a few who fabricated, designed and painted French barbotine. The forms and their decoration, much of it in high or gros relief, are of an extreme variety. He was especially known for his exceptional floral reliefs. Few pieces remain unrestored today due to the fragility of the relief of decoration.
This vase displays stems of flowers and leaves in relief in pale yellows and corals. The vase’s ground colors are in dark greens fading to light greens and creams with stems and leaves done in slight relief. The base is bronze with reticulated fleur-de-lys and rests upon four stylized French dolphin feet. This is a magnificent vase of barbotine by Edouard Gilles is one of his exceptional examples.
