An Antique French Plated, Cast Plaster Statue of Musical Putti at Play – Incised Signature: Vivi – Very Good Antique Condition – Minor Oxidizing to Plating – 19th C.

This unusual antique French plaster statue has been plated with a thin mixture of a copper based solution applied over the casting of plaster.  The result appears as though the statue is bronze and the method was probably not easily accomplished.

The subject is a group of three mischievous, putti musicians on a foliate ground tipping over a vessel with liquid spilling down the hill.  The putti on top holds a tambourine while the bottom two hold castanets and a flute.  Musical putti were a popular subject in Greek Mythology and being putti, were always depicted as mischievous.
