Antique French Copper Lavabo (Fontaine d’Applique) from Villedieu-les-Poeles in Normandy. Bronze Hardware- Good Antique Condition - Old Restorations, Upper Rim has Minor Crack –Late 1800’s
From the early 1300's, Villedieu-les-Poeles in Normandy has been known for making copper pans and other wares, as well as bronze, pewter, and lace. It has a motif of a coat of arms on its front, it is bordered by repeating stylized palmettes at the top and bottom rims. The bronze spigot is a stylized lion’s head.
These were originally used for washing one’s hands and would have been mounted on a wall, indoors or outdoors. Today, they can be used as a decorative accessory on a wall or placed upon any surface in a holder as an accent.
