Age: Circa 1900’s; Condition:
Very Good Antique Condition; Soldering to bottom of Grain Scoop. Apparently, at one time, this scale belonged to Madame Catherine-Helene Barale at her celebrated restaurant, Chez Barale. It is marked C.H.E. Barale on the bottom of the circular brass weight tray.
The restaurant called simply Barale or Chez Barale was once a farmhouse surrounded by fields. Catherine-Hélène Barale keeps Old Nice alive. Her restaurant is an informal museum, chockablock with antique farm implements and rustic kitchen tools, and the nightly feast Barale offers is practically an encyclopedia of traditional Niçoise cuisine. (From an article on Nice Cuisine written in 2001)
Madame Barale’s scale has ornamentation centered on either side of a coat of arms with c and s scrolls, vines and florets. On the four ends are volutes of bull heads decorated with leaves at their collars. The hand hammered brass grain scoop and the circular brass weight tray are both very thick and heavy.
