Pair of Antique French Bronze Statues-The Marly Horses

This stunning pair of antique bronzes were based on the massive Marly Horses marble statues in France. Originally commissioned by King Louis XV in 1739, and carved by Guillaume Coustou, the statues remain standing today. From the outset, Coustou's horses were considered to be masterpieces of French sculpture and were spared the fate of the Château de Marly (destroyed during the Revolution). After being moved several times, the originals now stand in Le Louvre museum. The novelty of this work lies in the absence of any mythological or allegorical reference. It represents primitive nature, a struggle between two wild forces: an untamed horse and a man, athletic muscles straining.

This bronze pair is from the 1800's. They are in good overall condition, with minor inconsistencies to the finish.  Pin mounting of the tail on one horse is slightly loose and raised, and the reins to bridle are disconnected.
