Framed Napoleon Print from France |
This antique French framed print of an engraving depicts Queen Louise meeting with Napoleon at Tilsit in 1806 to plead unsuccessfully for favorable terms after Prussia’s disastrous losses in the Napoleonic Wars. Her marriage to the Prussian crown prince in 1793, and accession as queen consort four years later led to Louis becoming the center of a royal court. The popular queen became known for her beauty and charm, and made it her business to be aware of affairs of state, developing ties to powerful government ministers. The couple’s happy though short-lived marriage produced nine children, including the future monarchs Frederick William IV of Prussia and German Emperor Wilhelm I . Her early death at the age of thirty-four “preserved her youth in the memory of posterity”, and caused Bonaparte to reportedly remark the King “has lost his best minister. *From Wikipedia |
