Pair of Antique French Barbotine Plates 1880

Longchamp Dijon

Pears and Blossoms on one plate; Apples and Blossoms on the other, from the Longchamp Factory, Dijon, France –Marks to back-Longchamp Terre De Feu -Very Good Antique Condition

In 1867, in the wonderful region of Burgundy in France, not far from Dijon, Robert Charbonnier started the Fondation of Potteries of Bourgogne and began making majolica and barbotine with considerable success.  In 1912, the demand for tableware brought a change in leadership, name and product.  It was called S. A. Faienceries of Longchamp under the direction of Gaetan Moisand and the factory dealt strictly in faience (tin glazed earthenware). The clay used to make the wares was scarce and had to be brought in from Brittany, the Parisian Basin and England.  He produced extremely high quality platters, planters, plates and vases with applied fruits and flowers in high relief.

This pair of wall plates displays fruits in high relief.  One plate has a branch of pears with blossoms and leaves in colorations of yellows, greens, browns, and pinks. The other plate has a branch of apples with blossoms in colorations of orange/reds, greens, corals, and browns.  The plates can be hung on a wall or placed in a display rack. Longchamp barbotine is highly sought after due to its fine quality.
