Edouard Gilles-Ecole de Paris Late1800s
Condition: Excellent
This is a very rare pair of tall antique French gros relief barbotine urn by Edouard Gilles of Paris. Though he executed a wide variety of forms and decoration, he was most known for his magnificent artistic interpretation of flowers in an extremely difficult medium and technique. Some of the largest pieces of gros relief barbotine were executed by Edouard Gille’s atelier. This pair of urns has a ground color of a mottled pale blue consisting of pale blues, creams, metallic gold, and deep blues. This coloration is also a very rare to find in his pieces. The gros relief decorations consist of large and small roses, in pinks, yellows and creams, in all phases of bloom maturity. The foliate greenery goes from pale green to deep green. There are other varieties of smaller flowers in various sizes and types, mixed in throughout the floral elements. A colorful bird is perched at the base of the neck of each urn.
Edouard Gille’s period of gros relief barbotine production was a mere 10 years from 1870-1880, making his pieces quite rare. This pair qualifies in rarity in three areas: a pair, their size, and the ground colors.
