French Terra Cotta Glazed Statue-Signed

A  French Glazed Terracotta Statue of a Young Woman Carrying Jugs and a Cup- Incised Signature but Indecipherable - Good  Condition – Minor Chips to Terracotta- 20th C. This glazed terracotta statue from France is of smiling young country woman carrying a cup and two vessels of liquid refreshments.  The glaze is a pale ochre color and her countenance is pleasing to the eye.  She would make a wonderful accessory in any room.

Terracotta  has been used as a medium for various decorations and building materials since the bronze age and has been utilized by all countries.  Colorations of unfired terracotta vary widely, depending upon the minerals in the earth to produce the clay.  Most commonly known for an orange coloration, due to iron content, terracotta can also be in tones of grey, yellow and pink .  It is light in weight  and takes well to intricate detailing.  When glazed, it can withstand freezing temperatures.
