Antique Walnut Wood Book Holder, 17th Century

This incredibly interesting antique bookstand is from Northern Europe (likely Netherlands or Flanders) and has been carved from walnut wood. It can also be considered a Bible stand or lectern. The top front has an arched center with wonderful large scrolls flanking either side. Beneath this is a square, framed and indented circular motif showing the bust of a man in profile, wearing a Medieval style skullcap. Beneath the book shelf, is a reclining putti in a foliate setting holding flowers in his hand. All this rests upon three banded, foliate feet separated by open demilunes. The bookstand is comprised of two individual pieces of walnut that have been joined through interlocking sections to form a working hinge. There is no center bar piece for it to rotate on. With its beautiful walnut patina and design, this remarkable little bookstand can act as a standalone accessory or piece of carved art.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with nicks, losses of wood and motifs, old woodworm.
