Pair of Antique Cast and Hand Hammered Iron Elevator Gates from France

H=58 1/2, W=24 1/4

Very Good Antique Condition – minor rusting – Circa 1900

The pair of antique French elevator gates have motifs of C-scrolls, s-scrolls, hearts, circles and acanthus leaves.  There design usually followed similar ironwork in the building or home.  Usually, they were part of a moveable ironwork cage that would have a personal operator sitting inside to take the rider to the designated floor or story of the building.  In the 1800’s, glass was sometimes placed inside the ironwork to protect the passengers from drafts. These wonderful gates are now used as ornamentation in elevators, as wine room entry gates, garden gates, or separated, one on either side, as entry décor to any large room entrance.
