Period Regence Walnut Wood Overdoor, Circa 1730-*restorations have been made*
H=38, W=45 1/2
Period Regence (1715-1730) Single Overdoor Panel from a Boiserie Room – Good Antique Condition Commensurate with Age , Restorations
This beautifully hand carved antique French overdoor from a boiserie, or a wooden panel from a paneled room, could be used as a headboard, an architectural wall hanging or, over a door frame as it was originally used. The cartouche depicts three people in conversation resting against a large rock. This scene is framed with Regence ornamentation. There are c-scrolls and rinceau, a stylized Regence central shell at the top, and various flowers throughout.
This rare walnut wood overdoor panel is from the French Regence period (1715-1730). In 1715, upon Louis XIV’s death, the regency was left to his nephew, Philippe d”Orleans, as Louis XV was too young to reign as King. Upon Philippe’s death in 1723, Louis XV assumed reign as King. Furniture of this short period is classified from 1715-1730, as the style extended into Louis XV’s reign. Due to the short duration, pieces from this period are extremely rare, as well as distinctly different from Louis XIV and Louis XV. Regence furniture is a poised blend of charm and elegance—less imposing than Louis XIV, but less exuberant than that of Louis XV.
