Sculpted 18th Century Oak Overdoor
An Antique French Period Louis XV (1715-1774). European Oak Overdoor from a Paneled Room- (Today, they are often used for Headboards) Stripped at one point in in history - Very Good Condition
This magnificent French Period Louis XV (1715-1774) overdoor , now often used as headboards for beds, once graced a completely boiseried (wooden paneled) room with the same ornamentation. European Oak was considered the premium wood for high end furnishings during that period. Different from American Oak in its grain and patina, European Oak acts more like a fruitwood in its patination.
Under Louis XV, asymmetry and curved lines are all-pervasive with attenuated c and s-scrolls being interrupted by motifs or softened by moldings. This overdoor has moldings of reed and ribbon interrupted by curved leaves and a central asymmetrical acanthus leaf cluster with scrolling floral vines interspersed throughout.
