An Antique French Drapery Valance of Stripped Walnut Wood – Very good antique condition – old restoration to left top leaf – metal inserts to back. – Circa 1900

This antique French drapery valance was originally used over the narrow windows, doors, or beds to hold draperies which would be tied back during the day and closed during the evening or when privacy or warmth was needed. The motifs are exaggerated acanthus leaves, c-scrolls, s-scrolls , stylized palmettes and more.  It is walnut wood, that has been stripped of its finish at some point in its history.

This was probably carved by a cabinetmaker in the Normandy Region of France, as the relief is deep and typical of that region.
