Antique European Oak Bonnetiere from France-Elegant Mix of Louis XV and Louis XVI Style; Late 1800's
H=92, W=36, D=21 (dimensions inclue crown)
French Transitional furniture is a transition between Rococo (under Louis XV) and Neoclassic (under Louis XVI)— sinuous curves to rectilinear straight lines retaining some of each. The ornamentation on this beautifully carved French bonnetiere (originally used to store women’s bonnets) has the Louis XV asymmetrical floral motif on the curved sides, c-scroll acanthus leaf motifs and short cabriole legs. The beribboned bows, placed symmetrically on the front panels and the basket of flowers represent Louis XVI. Occasionally motifs from Louis XIV period, such as the musical trophy were also used on transitional pieces
This French bonnetiere is the ideal size for narrow spaces. In the shape of a half armoire, it is now used for all kinds of storage—linens, bathroom towels, hallway storage, kitchen storage, TV and components and more.
