Antique Louis XIV Period Armoire Droite |
This magnificent French Armoire Droite was constructed during the period of Louis XIV from solid French walnut wood. An Armoire Droite was a tall and narrow upright cupboard having only one hinged door, and had one drawer beneath the door. Typical of Louis XIV ornamentation, this armoire’s door has a central arched panel with smaller surrounding panels outlining the center and culminating in four right-angle corners. To either side of the door are four separate, narrow, raised panels complementing the design of the door. The sides mirror the front door’s design. The single drawer beneath has a hand forged steel handle at the center and the door is attached with thick hand forged steel hinges. There are rectangular, narrow horizontal raised panels on both side panels giving the same symmetry as the front. Bold flattened bun feet are on the front and the back feet are half bun feet allowing the armoire to be placed flush to the wall. There is a double stepped out cornice at the top and a single stepped out socle. The moldings all have bold contours with deep relief giving this Period Armoire a majestic, yet elegant presence. The patina is deep and rich portraying its years of polished French Walnut Wood. Period Louis XIV Armoires Droites are difficult to find and also rare. Condition: Rubs and nicks; old restorations; old wormwood , all commensurate with 300 plus years of age. |
