This antique French bibliotheque was most likely part of a room of boiserie (wooden paneled room). The room would have had panels with the same ornamentation as is featured on the piece.
These types of pieces can be used for a variety of display purposes and have a narrow depth which accommodates spaces that are difficult to furnish.  The ornamentation of the scalloped frieze is that of a central floral  basket with scrolling rinceau to either side.  The side panels are fluted with a rods bearing leaf buds half way down. The lower two cabinets have a single shelf. 

This versatile antique French bibliotheque can be used for book display, accessories or both. Condition:  Old wood worm in areas, old restorations to feet.
