Large Painted Louis XV Style Bibliotheque from France

Antique French Louis XV Style Painted, Bibliotheque from a Room of Boiserie (Paneled Wood) -The frontage probably framed a mirror, painting, or panel painting in the room; shelves, top molding, sides added later to form bibliotheque  –  Good Antique Condition – chipping of paint, separations to joints in area. – Frontage is C. 1800

During the early reign of Louis XV (early 1700’s) the style of interior architecture changed from grand suites of chilly ceremonial rooms to smaller ones that were comfortable, well heated, and intimate to the point of coziness.  Walls of marble gave way to high paneling that was painted, carved or varnished.  These wooden paneled rooms were called boiserie.  Boiserie would also have elements of furniture built into the paneling, such as consoles (see our code #701 under Consoles for a good example), built in framed paintings and panel paintings, mirrors and more.  Painted wood was often used as it fostered harmony between furniture and paneling; the moldings and sculpture of both could be painted the same contrasting color.

This wonderful Louis XV Style painted bibliotheque was made from a frame taken from a boiserie that was made anywhere from late 1700’s to early 1800’s The top molding, sides, and shelves were added to make a bibliotheque of a certain dimension at some point in its history.  The front raised molding is elongated serpentine volutes surrounding the opening for the bookshelves.  At the top of the volutes is a pair of graceful birds.

Shallow in depth, this piece could be used for books or to display accessories and is part of a beautiful period of French history.
