This beautiful antique piece was originally from a boiserie (Wooden Paneled Room). Condition: Minor chips and rubs to wood, paint, and ornamentation; Central shell has been restored. Paint on inside is recent.
This rare 18th C. painted French Louis XV Period bibliotheque (library) on a two door enfilade came from a French wooden paneled room or boiserie. Bibliotheques of boiserie were either flush with the paneling or projected out from the paneling. In either case, they were connected to the paneling, and the crown and baseboard moldings of the furnishings would be contiguous around the entire room. The ornamentation, wood, and or paint colors would also be the same throughout. Freestanding furniture would complement the style.
This bibliotheque has the same projecting crown molding of the boiserie it was removed from and the piece would have extended out from the paneling. The shaped and open front of the upper section has three shelves which rest upon a slightly deeper cabinet with two doors. The sides have decorative inset and raised panels. The ornamentation is that of the Louis XV period with c-scroll indents, a central shell, and scrolling vines with florets.
This rare piece of French architectural history is ideally suited for today’s rooms. Narrow in depth, this antique bibliotheque can be used as a library or for displaying accessories. It could also house a flat screen television by removing the shelves.
