Louis XV Style Oak Bonnetiere from Normandy, France |
Early 1900s, Whitewashed This beautiful French Normandy wedding bonnetiere has been given a white-washed finish over raw oak at some point in its history giving it a light and airy feel . Its size is suitable for any area needing a smaller piece that has nice storage capabilities. Normandy cabinet makers throughout history were known for their fine and artistic carving, and were heavily influenced by the fashions of the Parisian ebenistes. This bonnetiere has an arched center cornice and the freize bears a raised trophy consisting of a foliate and floral wreath surrounding elements of the quiver and cornucopia of flowers, representing the theme of love. A stylized asymmetrical rocaille cartouche is at the center with trailing floral and foliate vines to either side. The shaped top panel of the door has an unusual stylized shell at the center displaying the outer portion of the shell as sunflower petals. The decoration of the horizontal panel also has a stylized sunflower motif with rocaille decoration to either side. The apron displays another stylized shell with foliate decoration to either side. French bonnetieres were originally used for storing bonnets and hats. Today they are used for any storage purpose and very adaptable to small areas such as powder baths , small kitchen areas or hallways. Condition: Minor age separations to panels; minor rubs to finish |
