Pair of Antique French Hand Carved Renaissance Style Cathedra – French Walnut Wood and Oak Good Antique Condition,  Minor rubs to wood

Cathedra means a chair designated for a Bishop of the Church or any person of high esteem.  In France the Kings often used a cathedra or throne chair for official meetings of the court.  These cathedrae have panels typical of Renaissance ornamentation with grotesques of male and female faces surrounded by guilloche banding.   The tops of each chair feature French Gothic style  décor between two higher, carved finials.  There is a plethora of hand carved detailing throughout each chair.  The backs are plain and the seats feature sliding panels revealing storage beneath.
