Antique Louis XV Style Parcel Giltwood Bench-Mid 1800s

This beautiful French bench is a specimen of what true parcel giltwood is.  Attempts to emulate this look have been tried over the years by many finishers with little success.  The overall profile of the Louis XV Style bench  is that of continuing s-scrolls at the sides with shaped frontal and back panels in the middle.  The raised end panels are caned within a curved cartouche shape.  There is ornamentation of asymmetrical rocaille shells, scrolling vines intersecting moldings, florets,  and acanthus leaves.  The gentle s-curved legs have been decorated with acanthus leaves and terminate in scrolled feet with acanthus leaves known as roquillards.

Benches such as these were often placed in front of tall narrow windows, mirrors or panels of boiserie.  Today, they are used anywhere a small bench is needed. Condition:  Rubs to wood and gilding; age separations in areas; upholstery soiled and frayed; two holes in caning of one side.
