18th Century Period Regence Buffet de Chasse
This is a rare, Period Regence Buffet De Chasse made of European Oak. The massive marble top measures over 8 cm/3 in thick and weighs hundreds of pounds! This is unseen in most antique pieces today. There is some restoration to this piece, and it is in very good condition.
In 1715, upon Louis XIV's death the regency was left to his nephew, Philippe d'Orleans, as Louis XV was too young to reign as King. Upon Philippe's death in 1723, Louis XV assumed reign as King. Furniture of this short period (1715-1730) became known as Regence style and extended into Louis XV's reign. Due to the short duration, pieces from this period are extremely rare as well as distinctly different from Louis XIV and Louis XV. Regence furniture is a poised blend of charm and elegance-less imposing than Louis XIV, but less exuberant than that of Louis XV.
This magnificent Buffet de Chasse (Hunting Buffet) is made of European oak, which in that period, was only used for the finest pieces. The decorative motifs are lozenge patterned grounds with florets and c-scroll flat banding, encircling lozenges with dots. On the frieze, two drawers become part of another shaped pattern of lozenges with florets. The paneled doors have notched corners with banded cartouches and florets. The center is attached to the left door. The vertical side panels to either side of the doors are actually attached to the two center doors via hinges. This is the distinguishing characteristic of a "Buffet De Chasse". The apron has a center stylized Regence palmette cartouche with a patterned lozenge design at its center. To either side are banded shaped designs of more patterned lozenges and trailing florets. The beautiful and massive acanthus leaf feet are very unique and are balanced in size and length by its 8cm thick marble top.
