"Double Hat" Vaisselier from Rennes, Brittany
This rare antique French vaisselier (hutch) has a double dome, or “double hat” characteristic of those once made in Rennes. It is unusually tall and narrow. All of the hand carving on the piece is out of the wood, not applied. There are birds, fleur-de-lys, bell flowers, and other scrolling foliage throughout. Each of the doors has moldings imitating the double hat shape.
The top third of the vaisselier is comprised of two cupboard doors with an apron of open chevron fretwork. The center area has two shelves with the same decorative fretwork. The lower part has two drawers and a two door cupboard.
The patina is that of a piece that has been well preserved over the 200 or so years.
