Catalan Style Table with Faux Red Leather Top

Antique Catalane Style Table from France with Paint over Gesso on Carved Wooden Top (Top is antique (Late 1800s), Base is 20th C)–Iron Stretchers -  Catalane Style Walnut  Wood Base - Good Antique Condition with small restoration to center medallion-

From France, this antique Catalane style table has hand forged and incised stretchers between the Catalane style walnut wood base.  The painted and carved gesso wooden top was done with a method which originated in Italy centuries ago.  The wooden top was first hand carved in a design, then coated with layers of gesso (originally, a mixture of rabbit glue and chalk).  Once the gesso had hardened, the overall design was re-carved and painted in various colors. The technique also imitated hand painted and embossed leather which is the case on this table.  The top has been done with a base design of scrolling rinceau surrounding a center medallion.  The paint has crackled  and is a deep, aged red with aged cream highlights and slight traces of gold and charcoal.

These antique tables are extremely versatile, and can be used for dining, sofa tables, library tables, or center tables for displaying accessories.
