Antique Italian Walnut Wood Console from Umbria (top is antique)
H=32 1/2, L=100 1/2, D=23 1/2
An Antique Italian Console with Iron Stretchers –Italian Walnut Wood
(Noce) – Good Antique Condition – Legs and Stretchers are late 20th C. – Top is Circa 1750
This resplendent Italian walnut wood console has a wonderful history. Originally, the top of the console was part of an Italian walnut wood table made in the mid 1700’s from the Umbrian Region of Italy . Umbria is in the central portion of Italy bordering Tuscany on one side. The center portion of the table had been damaged and could not be repaired, as it would have been impossible to locate walnut wood of the same age, region and thickness. Consequently, the ends were saved and made into two, iron based consoles. We have one left from the two.
The stepped down borders of the console top can also be seen from underneath. Hand planing can be seen where the original cut was made. The thick walnut wood legs are most unusual in that they are placed in line with shape of the top edges. The hand carved legs are ornamented with stylized leaves and the feet are scrolled.
