Hand Carved Walnut Wood Maie from France
This is a French petrin/maie made of walnut wood. It is carved with musical motifs and is in very good condition save some damage to a back foot. We believe it to be circa 1950.
The petrin was originally used to knead dough. The cover lifts up for ease of use and closes while the bread raises. They were usually placed against a wall with a pannetiere above it. The pannetiere was used to dry the freshly baked crusty bread. Today, they are used as decorative pieces used in any room. The carvings include horns, drums, music sheets and more. Scrolling vines with leaves and buds extend to either side of these.
