Antique Continental Fruitwood Coffer, Late 18th Century

This very old and beautiful trunk has a hinged top which is inset with two floral-carved panels, opening to a void interior. The front is paneled and carved en suite, raised on runner feet. Trunks of this size were often used to carry items which were being transported between residences.  Fruitwood was lighter in weight which made it easier to move.   Once in place in the residence, they were placed upon a  stand or table for easy accessibility.
