Antique French Walnut Wood Desk Made From An 18th Century Maie |
Antique French "Maie" were originally used as grain storage receptacles. The paddles on the front were slid to the side for easy access to the grain, rather than lifting the lid on the main section of the maie. Later on, these pieces were often used in French kitchens or dining areas as a place to store table linens and cutlery. This antique French walnut wood maie from the 18th C. has been converted into a desk with drawers on either side of the kneehole portion. It still rests upon its original baluster shaped legs and bun feet. Condition: Previous restorations, nicks, rubs and minor losses to wood consistent with age. |
