An 18th C. French Normandy Wedding Trunk - Very Good Antique Condition – Previous restorations to interior- Minor wearing of relief in areas, rubs and nicks; one key
This deeply carved antique French Normandy Wedding trunk is from the late 1700’s. Wedding trunks were given to the bride and groom by the bride’s parents. The more detailed the carving was, the wealthier the family was. This trunk is very heavily carved, featuring ornamentation in the Renaissance style. The acanthus leaf is carved and used throughout the trunk in various forms. There are multiple layers of moldings featuring densely carved motifs of varying ornamentations. Pilasters of caryatids are on either side of the front panel, which opens to the right and features one interior shelf. The apron features oval leaf ornamentation and geometric rectangular reliefs. The side panels have palmettes, stylized shells and guilloche motifs.
Highly carved wedding trunks from Normandy are always in demand, but this one is particularly rare in age and condition.
