A Rare, Hand Carved, Small Antique French 17th C., Gothic Style, European Oak Trunk with Hand Wrought Iron Hardware – Good Antique Condition Commensurate with Age – 1600’s
This rare 17th C. antique French gothic style truck, small in size, is very versatile.
These trunks were originally used as portable furniture traveling between city chateaux and country homes. Once in place they could be placed atop a stand, table, or on the floor for storing linens and blankets. The gothic hand carving on the front panel of this trunk features lancets (pointed arches), foils, and tracery, and cusps. The construction is dove tailing. The hand wrought iron hardware is still in tact. The trunk rests upon a hand carved molded base with hand carved lancets on either side of the trunk.
Today, these small trunks are still used for the same purposes as they were in the 1600’s, in addition to decorative purposes.
