An Antique French Parcel Gilt Iron Firescreen in the Louis XV Rocaille Style with Antique French Machine Made Tapestry Insert - Good Antique Condition- loss of gilding on metal and minor fraying to tapestry– Circa 1900
The antique French gilt metal tapestry firescreen in the rocaille style was originally used to block the heat from a fireplace. They were made for the nobility of the time and were placed between the person’s chair and the fireplace. The parcel gilt ironwork has cherubs, rocaille c-scrolls, florets, scrolling vines and beautifully cast cherubs. The tapestry is in the fete galante style, originated by the French artist, Jean Antoine Watteau, which featured elegantly dressed groups of people at play in a rural or park like setting.
These firescreens are used a decorative accessories in more formal settings.
