Aixoise Emblem Fireback from Flanders

Berloz Family from Liege 1662

H=38, W=25 1/2

Originally, firebacks were used in fireplaces to radiate heat into the room. Now, in addition to use in fireplaces, they can also be used as ornamentation on stone walls, above stoves, or as an accessory

This antique iron fireback from Belgium has the family coat of arms of the Berloz Family of Liege, with a date of 1662. The ornamentation is in the style of Louis XVI including pinecone finials, garlands of laurel hanging from a tied bow, elongated stylized acanthus leaves, a crown with lozenge and beading, and finally, a crowned lion supporting concave and convex vertical panels.
