French Cast Iron Fireback Sides
*These were originally made for a large firebox, where they sat on either side of a much larger fireback*
A Pair of Antique French, Finely Cast, Iron Firebacks Depicting Bacchanalian Cherubs – Good Antique Condition – Some rusting to iron – Late 1800’s or older
These antique French iron firebacks depict delightful scenes of Bacchanalian Cherubs very busily forging an item. The fleeting arrows are sparks flying from the piece as they hammer it. These were once the side panels to a much larger fireback. Today, they could be used as panels above a cooktop, or simply as architecturals hanging on a wall. The ornamentation is a cartouche framing the cherubs, with stylized shells ,scrolling foliage and flowers, acanthus leaves, and c and s-scrolls. Bacchanalian cherubs were portrayed as playful or mischievous, but always entertaining to the viewer.
