Antique French Cast Iron Fireback |
Featuring a Triple Fleur de Lys Coat of arms, Circa 1900 This wonderful antique French iron fireback features a coat of arms with a central cartouche having an oval shield bearing the triple fleur-de-lys beneath a coronet. Scrolling foliage and flowers flank the shield and a central shell is at the base. The entire fireback is rimmed with gadrooned raised relief. Firebacks were originally and still are used to emit heat from the fire, in mantles or at the back of a stove top. In mantles, they are placed on the floor of the firebox leaning against the back wall. Today they are also used as decorative accessories on garden walls or interior walls.
