Antique Louis XV Style Tapestry Firescreen |
FRANCE ; Mid to Late 1800’s This beautiful antique French firescreen has a parcel giltwood surround with ornamentation of the Louis XV style. The scenic tapestry insert depicts a 19th C. version of the daughter of Pharaoh and her maidens discovering Moses in his basket at the riverbank. 18thC. and 19thC. firescreens were used to cover the fireplace when nothing was burning inside it. They were used to make what could have been a boring hole in the wall look more decorative. Condition: Minor losses to ornamentation and gilding; rubs and nicks to wood; tapestry has no flaws but has faded with age. |
