Unique Pair of Antique Louis XV Style Giltwood Mirrors
H=71 3/4, Width at Base=24 1/4
A Pair of Louis XV Style Parcel Giltwood Mirrors with Beveled Glass – Good Antique Condition Commensurate with Age – Mid 1800’s – Some recent highlights of gold leaf added; beveled mirrors and wooden backing added at a later date. Pairs of antique French mirrors are very difficult to find, making these rare and a good investment for the lover of French antiques. Historically, during a certain period, mirrors could only be made in
smaller sizes due to the constraints of making glass at the time. The frames were adapted to the size of the mirrored glass available.
This pair of mirrors has a shorter height to the top mirror and a longer height to the bottom with the same width to each. They are separated by a curved piece of giltwood matching the entire frame’s décor. Following the Louis XV style of ornamentation there is rolled reed and ribbon, rocaille shells, curved asymmetrical acanthus leaves, gadrooned acanthus leaves, c-scrolls, florets and more. The red bole for the gold leaf peaks through in areas, showing its age.
