Condition: Old Restoration to painting; Crown ornamentation added at some point in its history; Minor loss of silvering on glass– 19th C.
This antique French giltwood trumeau has a peaceful genre style painting of a young woman and man getting ready to have a picnic in the woods. He is beginning to lay the blanket down while she reaches to help.
The giltwood and ornamented frame has a serpentine shape around the painting and continues with a rectangular shape around the silvered glass with only a slight curve to the top where elongated c –scrolls meet. Overall ornamentation includes acanthine c-scrolls, florets, rais-de-coeur, stylized fleur-de-lys, gadrooned leaves, with scrolling vines. The frame has been sealed with a glaze. The upper crown ornamentation that was added at some point in time has not been sealed.
These types of French trumeaux are wonderful to view as well as adaptable to narrow areas needing depth.
