Massive Pair of Antique Oil Paintings From Boiseried Room in France
A Pair of Massive Antique French Framed Paintings from a Boiseried (Wooden Paneled) Room – Oil on Canvas - Very Good Antique Condition – restorations at some point in their history –Late 1700’s – Early 1800’s–Frames have minor loss and are from a later period.
These magnificent and massive Century French oil paintings on canvas are originally from a French boiserie or wooden paneled room. That the pair of paintings survived together is very rare. Boiserie panels were either inset with tapestries (woven or later, machine made), paintings (on canvas, or painted directly on the wooden surface), or later jacquard cloth, or paper which had been hand painted (the first wallpaper). The aristocracy would have had hand woven tapestries or oil paintings on canvas.
This pair depicts, what we believe to be a chateau property. The first painting is the front of the chateau’s property, featuring a body of water, where the property owners are being given a glass of wine by the staff. To the left forefront, one of the staff is refilling a carafe with more wine from the keg. Another gentleman is fishing from a bank, and there is a village on a hillside in the distance. The second painting depicts what we believe to be the back area of the chateau. The property owner is seated at a bench with one of the staff having a glass of wine. Since there is an abundance of wine kegs in both paintings, this could have been a chateau that produced wine.
Both pieces have been framed in a later period lacquered mahogany frame, with surround in a matte black. These paintings are for the discerning antique collector.
