Louis XV Style of Genre Painting-Oil on Canvas – Very Good Antique Condition – Minor loss to paint
This pair of antique French panel paintings is done in the “Genre Style”. This category of “Genre” painting became popular during the 18th C. after Louis XIV. The style depicted scenes of ordinary people in everyday life, indoors or outdoors, in imagined, realistic, or romantic settings.
The first painting shows a man, woman and child stopping their hike in the mountains to feed the child. The second painting depicts a mountain journey with the man walking and a woman on an ox. There is a basket hanging from the neck of the ox and the woman is holding her arm out for the man to help her down. Two lambs stand on either side of the ox. Their trompe l’oeil borders mimic frames in the rococo style.
