“La Paimpolaise” is the name of a famous Brittany song written by Theodore Botrel in the mid 1890’s.  Paimpol is an old fishing village in Brittany, France and “La Paimpolaise” translates to the “Paimpol Girl.”  As in many Brittany fishing villages, each year, fishermen would set off for the amazingly long journey to Iceland and even the Grand Banks to find fish.  The  subject of the song/poem was of the mothers, sisters, and girlfriends left behind on these fishing expeditions, thus the name, “La Paimpolaise”. 

This is one of 2 paintings that we have, depciting famous French songs, done in the mid 1900’s.  They were recovered from a bar in Brittany.  Rubs and flaking in certain areas.  A skilled artist can easily touch this up if desired.
