Madonna Della Sedia Antique Oil Painting after original by Raphael Sanzio da Urbino |
This 18th C. oil painting on canvas is after Raphael’s, “Madonna della Sedia”. It depicts Mary embracing the Christ child, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches. Raphael painted the picture in Rome and was soon passed into the Medicean collections in or around 1589. It has been in the Pitti since the 18th C.. It was carried off to Paris by the Napoleonic troops in 1799 and brought back to Florence in 1815. This painting after Raphaels, has a stamp of c. 1785; however, it is not signed by the artist. The painting was relined and restored in 2011. The frame which is 20th century, was also restored at the same time. Condition: A small raised portion on the canvas; relined, restored 2011; Frame 20th C. restored 2011. |
