17th C. French Antique Framed Painting on Leather

This rare antique French painting on leather from the late 1600’s or early 1700’s depicts the Virgin Mary, under the specific title of the Immaculate Conception.  The specific attributes which illustrate this piece are generally drawn from the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse) and include the 'crown' of stars and the dragon or serpent under her feet.  She is standing upon a circular mound dressed in draped robes of teal blue, white and gold with her arms and hands outstretched and her countenance gazing downward and to the side.  Two angel’s faces with wings are off to either side.  At the outer top of the cartouche  emanating from the c-scroll motifs and to the lower sides are stems of red roses with leaves.  Red roses have much symbolism attached to them, depending upon the religion or culture.  At the center top is a stylized motif of angel wings centered by a rose with leaves below.

The rest of the painting features more scrolling vines of different flowers and colors .  The background is gilded leather throughout.  The primitive teal frame was probably added at a later time.

Note:  Due to the age of this painting on leather, all details are not completely visible.  We have described it to the best of our knowledge in its unrestored condition.

Condition:  Craquelure and varnish inconsistencies; surface grime; all consistent with its age-Late 1600’s/Early 1700’s.
