Period Louis XV Silk and Linen Tapestry |
1730-1750 This beautiful silk and linen tapestry is a depiction of people in Roman clothing and their dogs in a landscape scene. This tapestry has been particularly well preserved over the years as noted in the vibrant colors of the man’s costume and greens of the trees and foliation. The border depicts fruit and foliation in the same colors of the landscape portion of the tapestry. This tapestry from the early 1700’s will be an asset to any space it is placed within. The fact that there are any tapestries left is amazing due to the mass destruction of tapestries during the French Revolution. Tapestries were burned for their gold and silver threads, made into tents for the peasants and refugees or torn into pieces and used as coverings for warmth, and used as windbreaks for the vineyards. Once used by the wealthy to seal political alliances, tapestries were considered to be a liquid asset, especially during war or an economic crises. Condition: Previous restorations ,otherwise very good |
