Rambouillet Screen Print Tapestry-“Dame a La Licorne L’Odorat”

This is a screen print reproduction based on the original (XIV Century), which resides in the Musee Des Gobelin in Paris. It is in excellent condition. The French company, Rambouillet, has been selected as the sole replicator of the famous tapestries in the museums of France. Each reproduction matches the originals right down to each imperfection, watermark, etc. The originals, by French law, are not allowed to be sold or removed from the country.

La Dame à la licorne L'Odorat is one of six and was woven in Flanders, cradle of the tapestries in the Middle Ages, starting from paperboard cartoons, used as patterns, built in Paris. French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and master of the short story, Prosper Mérimée discovered these woven masterpieces in the Château de Boussac (pictured above) in 1841. George Sand made them famous in her writings. The crescents of the moon repeated in hangings do not have any relationship with the East or Islam. They belong to the armorial bearings of the Viste family of Lyons, to whom these tapestries seem to have originally belonged. The details of how La Dame à la licorne actually came into being are lost in the mists of time.
