Pair of Glazed Terra Cotta Anduze Urns

These beautiful garden urns are not antiques, but they have an aged finish which makes them really stand out. They were purchased in the South of France, and they exhibit many of the colors which you associate with Provence.

Anduze- is a small, quaint  town in the south of France. There have been potters working there for centuries, and they have spread a pottery style throughout France ("Anduze French Pottery") which began in the 1500s when terra cotta began to emerge as a material for many artisans. From the 1500s through the 1600s, it was difficult to make Anduze pottery. Because of the expense of these pots, only the noble class could afford them; and they were traditionally used in people's gardens. "Vases d"Anduze" spread to merchants and other better-off families after the French Revolution. Other Anduze pot owners included greenhouse owners and horticulturalists; trees could be planted in them and brought indoors to protect them against frosts and freezing weather. As the popularity of Anduze pots spread over time, more French ceramic makers took up the style, and they added their own flourishes

One important note is that these pots were fashioned recently, in the mid-century years (1950s and 1960s), but despite their relative newness, they were made to look old and distressed. Antique Anduze pots have true patina to them, but ours are made with the patina "baked on".

Outdoors: you can put them on the porch, adding instant curb appeal on either side of your front door or stoop. Add them around your pool or dot them with other pots on your deck, patio, terrace, or outdoor rooms.

Indoors: you can add a glass or marble top to them and turn them into a great center hall table; and of course you can use them traditionally as part of an indoor garden room, or plant ficus or other small decorative trees to give drama to your foyer, sunroom, or breakfast nook.
