Wicker covered large glass bottles were covered for transport reasons, originally.  Often transported by covered wagons on old bumpy roads, the glass bottles needed cushioning so they would not break.  The handles were added for ease in handling and carrying the somewhat heavy and bulky bottles. This French bottle from some time period in the 1900’s has been well preserved.
