Antique Walnut Wood Bonnetiere from France

An Antique French Louis XV Style Bonnetiere (Narrow Armoire originally for Bonnets) –Walnut Wood and European Oak as Secondary Wood- Good Antique Condition Relevant to Age – Restoration to crown –missing triglyphs to right front , Key latch added later, Shrinkage to left bottom side boards- Damage to feet -  Late 1700’s or earlier.

This antique French bonnetiere of walnut wood and European Oak secondary wood has a glass panel in its front door for display of objets d’art, linens, books or other items.  Originally these were used to store women’s bonnets.  Now they are in high demand due to their narrow size and storage versatility.

The crown has an “en chapeau” (arched in the center) molding with an interior running band of triglyphs.  The frieze has a leaf -encircled medallion of a sunflower.  The door has a central cartouche of a stylized lobed shell surrounded by more triglyphs and upheld by wave scroll c-scrolls .  The enclosed glass is surrounded by an asymmetrical serpentine convex molding with running triglyphs and stylized wave scrolls. The central asymmetrical horizontal panel and walnut wood bottom panel carry through with the same decorative motifs. This piece has a gently curved apron and rests upon slightly curved feet in the front and plank feet to the back.

This versatile piece could be used in a bathroom, hallway, kitchen, library, bedroom or any place that needs a narrow piece for display or storage.
