Hand-carved in the 1600s, this Gothic-style French trunk has a highly unique two-tone appearance. A partial stripping of the walnut wood has accentuated the elaborate arcading and blind tracery that adorns the front of the main body. Beige in tone, the stripped finish has also given added prominence to the construction of the trunk, revealing large box joinery that is reinforced by iron brackets. The original dark brown finish can still be seen on the lid and the undulating apron consisting of a series of ogee lancets. Historically used to store valuables, trunks were versatile pieces of furniture that doubled as seating in smaller areas. Consider placing our two-toned 17th-century Gothic trunk at the foot of a bed, in a hallway, or in a living room as a coffee table.
CONDITION: Strong antique condition. Commensurate losses as a result of old woodworm damage. Minor age separations. No key. The top has been restored more recently, and the bleached main body is not the original finish.
